FTP with Internet Explorer

Version 5 and newer of Internet Explorer for Mac and Windows support FTP file browsing and file transfer as well as web site browsing.

Browse Site Files with Explorer

You can browse the files on a web site, if you know the user name and password required by the FTP server for that site.

Login to your web site using a variation on your web site address. Schematically it will look like this:

ftp://username:password@domain.suffix/ (for a one-step login)
(or)
ftp://domain.suffix/ (for an authenticated two-step login)

Examples (don't forget to type the colon and @ after your user name):

ftp://JohnBrown:123jb@coachjohn.com/
(or)
ftp://janesplace.biz/

The two-step version replies a request for authentication, as below.

Typical Internet Explorer Authentication Dialog

Enter your password and Voila! The Explorer window displays files and folders at the root of your web site(s).

Double click a folder name to display the files in your web site, as below. Drag files from your web site to your hard drive and vice versa.
