Outlook vs. Outlook Express

Outlook for Windows is an extra cost option commonly provided with Microsoft Office. Outlook Express is usually included in Windows operating systems prior to Vista.

Setup for the two programs is different. Make sure you are using correct one for your computer.

Setting Up Outlook

Setup an email account using the Tools -> Email Accounts menu. This is a multistep process. Please use the screen graphics below to guide your progress.

Choose Tools > Email Accounts to begin.

The Email Accounts window opens.

  1. We recommend that you "Add a new Email account" for your WebValence hosted domain.
  2. If you are updating an existing account, choose "View or change ..."
  3. Tap 'Next'

Choose POP3 or IMAP

We recommend POP3 mail boxes for the average user. If you will be using more than one computer to access and manage your email, IMAP is a better choice.
  1. Choose POP3 or IMAP
  2. Tap 'Next'

Create a new account

  1. Enter information corresponding to the example below. Replace name, domain and password with your own equivalent information.
  2. Tap 'Test Account Settings...'
  3. You should get a favorable response if your information is correct.
  4. Tap 'More Settings at bottom right...'

More Settings ...

  1. Select the "General" tab
  2. Ensure that the "General" tab looks like this, but with your own personal information.

Enable Outgoing Server Authorization

  1. Choose the Outgoing Server tab.
  2. Place a check in the checkbox, "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."
  3. Select the radio button "Use same setings as my incoming mail server."
  4. Tap "OK"

Reset Outgoing Server Port

  1. Choose the Advanced Tab
  2. Replace Port 25 with Port 587. This is a workaround for ISPs that block port 25 messages.
  3. Tap "OK"

Leaving Messages on the Server

If you choose to leave messages on the server, it's important that you set them kept for no more than 5 days. Otherwise, your server inbox will fill and incoming messages will be bounced.

You're done! Choose the appropriate buttons to save your configuration.
